ya thats better, but usually if i have to do that kinda thing ill put 3 layers -- 1 base layer, usually ill alter that layer the most so its almost absurdly abstract (but maintains the gernal shapes/colors. then a second layer at 50% opacity (use disgression) and put some sort of texturing (doesnt have to be a texture filter, any filter that adds texture will work), then i put a low opacity copy of the original over the top to maintain the finer details. then a few adjustment layers, etc. border, etc. etc. etc. then text, etc. etc. etc.
also -- sometimes i use more than 3, more details, more texture, etc etc etc. try mixing 4 or 5 for some really intense effects.
